VOD develops fast in South America
'A Harmful Method''The Tree of Life''Elena''Drive'MADRID -- Latin America's VOD landscape is quickly attaining definition. In September, Netflix released a streaming-only service through the region. Argentina's two large telcos, Telefonica p Argentina and Telecom Argentina, also provide folded out VOD services. In South america, VOD is provided by satcaster Sky and cabler Internet. Also in South america, NetMovies, Latin America's greatest local Internet VOD operator, streams 4,000 films and series, getting cut its initial U.S. studio deal, with Disney, in September. For independent films, worldwide online VOD player Mubi works throughout South America Mexico has Canana OnDemand, Argentina has website Comunidad Zoom. Finally month's Ventana Sur, Spain's Filmin, an online film/TV VOD company, inked an offer with Colombia distrib Cineplex to build up something for The spanish language-speaking South America Cineplex will lead content and technology towards the Colombia Filmin service, states Filmin Boss Juan Carlos Tous.Cineplex's large 2012 releases -- "Tree of Existence," "Drive," "A Harmful Method" and "Elena" -- is going to be among photos on the internet service, states Cineplex prexy Elba McAllister. The Colombia launch will occur within the first half 2012 with 1,000 game titles, 300 from Colombia along with other Latin American nations, the relaxation worldwide, mostly Europe-acquired.Dealing with local territory partners, Filmin aims to grow throughout The spanish language-speaking South America. The Filmin-Cineplex alliance highlights possibilities for VOD in the area. Presently, Latin American online TV/video subscription revenues are minimal: 2010 saw just $a million from Argentina, $4 million from South america and $3 million from Mexico, based on Digital TV Research.Indie VOD in South America "continues to be in a diaper stage of growth, but it's growing," states Canana partner Pablo Cruz, who adds that Canana's VOD discharge of its TV series "Soy tu fan" solicited more buys than the usual normal studio release. But Canana OnDemand is transported on Cablevision, Mexico City's dominant cabler. Online, straight-to-PC services could face a harder fight. In Mexico, for example, people don't wish to hand out charge card particulars on the internet, Cruz states. For South America generally, Filmin's challenges are quite different from individuals of Netflix: Piracy is high, broadband transmission is low -- at 36% for Argentina, 24% for South america and 35% for Mexico this year, based on Screen Digest.Yet pay TV reaches under 25% of Latin American homes versus. 90% within the U.S., so VOD is way better situated to provide pay TV a run because of its money in the area, experts say.VOD can also be crucial in a very concentrated Latin American cinema exhibition market full of multiplexes that, even much more compared to Europe, is centered by Hollywood blockbusters."VOD," McAllister states, "offers huge possibilities for that distribution of Latin American and independent films."Marcelo Cajueiro, Charles Newbery and James Youthful led for this report. Scarlett Johansson hates her nickname
In a move that will almost certainly ensure she gets called it twice as much, Scarlett Johansson has revealed she hates the popular shortening of her name to the contrived abbreviation "Scar-Jo"."It's laziness," she told USA Today. "People can't actually say the whole name? It's just bizarre... If I hear somebody say that, I know I don't know them at all."Traditionally, it has only been younger Hollywood starlets who've had their first and second names hyphened together, and Johansson goes on to query why "serious actors" don't come in for the same treatment."So Cate Blanchett is not, like, 'Ca-Bla'?" she queried. "Why is that? Why do I have to get stuck with a mangled moniker?" She went on to suggest Da-Day for Daniel Day-Lewis, which we must confess, we rather like.Anyway, we've received the warning loud and clear, which is why poor Scarlett will now be referred to exclusively by her full name. Unless of course she stars in a film with Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, in which case the temptation might be too much to resist...

After "Casino Royale" so capably re-energized the text franchise, "Quantum of Solace" was a little of the disappointment. 5 E! Shows Sofia Coppola Should Make Right into a Movie
You do not normally see TMZ wade in to the vicious waters of Hollywood trade news -- especially trade news including an indie filmmaker -- however the gossip website is confirming that Sofia Coppola finds her next project: a film concerning the infamous Thief Bunch. Also called "The Jewelry Ring" (appealing), the Bunch includes a number of Hollywood teens who stole nearly $3 million in goods from stars like Paris Hilton, Orlando Blossom, Lindsay Lohan and Megan Fox. If the sordid story heard this before, it's likely since you were keen on the E! Show 'Pretty Wild,' which featured Bunch member Alexis Neiers. Per TMZ, Neiers's sister, Tess Taylor, equally infamous, will have a little role in Coppola's film, which may likely concentrate on celebrity -- like 'Lost in Translation,' 'Marie Antoinette' and 'Somewhere.' This really is all fine and dandy, however it boosts the question: the other E! shows if the Oscar-winning Coppola become movies? Ahead, five suggestions. 1. 'The Soup' Joel McHale stars as Joel McHale, a disillusioned-with-television comedy star who stays his days driving around La wondering why he ever agreed to get familiar with the Emmy Honours singing group The Emmytones. Benicio Del Toro bakes an uncredited appearance as themself. 2. 'Kourtney & Kim Take NY' Coppola has switched her hazy lens on Tokyo, japan, France and La, but never NY. This is where the Kardashians are available in! Coppola's film concerning the siblings would permit her to concentrate on a couple of things she's proven an earlier affection for: celebs (duh) and siblings (see 'The Virgin Suicides'). Kourtney and Kim can enjoy themselves, with Khloe taking pleasure in an uncredited and line-free role like a background extra. 3. 'Bridalplasty' A youthful bride (Emma Watson), infatuated using the reality show 'Bridalplasty,' becomes enthusiastic about the concept that marriage is simply another type of character mutilation. That point of view is amplified because her husband (Zac Efron) is really a music video director with little curiosity about his wife's existence. 4. 'The Spin Crowd' A disillusioned veteran pr guy (Bill Murray) continues tour together with his new client, an indie rock-band in the cusp of ghettoized fame. Karaoke plays most within the third act. 5. 'E! News Live' Coppola demonstrated experience towards the process behind making films and advertisements ('Somewhere' and 'Lost in Translation'), so why wouldn't you focus a whole film around the behind-the-moments workings of the celebrity news show. Ryan Seacrest can be displayed as themself, 'Knocked Up'-style, however the real stars from the film would be the awkward PA (Felicity Johnson) and her future boyfriend (Jason Schwartzman), a TelePrompTer specialist. Jonah Hill's 'Serious Acting Moment' in 'The Sitter' Didn't Increase the risk for Movie
Just before the release of 'Moneyball,' press shops were dedicated to a few things: Kaira Pitt's performance as Concord A's gm Billy Beane, and Jonah Hill's turn just like a semi-serious actor. No star desires to be typecast, that will help you understand Jonah's fascination with attempting to maneuver outdoors the teenage comedy genre that made him famous. Sadly, serious acting isn't necessarily needed -- specifically when you're developing a raunchy R-rated comedy. Inside an interview while using NY Occasions, Hill recalls taking things a touch too seriously while shooting scene for his approaching movie 'The Sitter.' It absolutely was stated to become a comic exchange between Mr. Hill... and Bruce Altman, the actor playing his absentee father who'll not help his boy among a particularly wayward evening of substitute caregiving. Nevertheless the scene needed an all of a sudden poignant turn as Mr. Hill revealed upon an tough to depend on parent who hadn't already been through it for him, and who had abandoned him and also the mother to start a completely new family. As Mr. Hill later mentioned from the scene, 'It felt really tough and raw and honest and difficult to check out in an ideal way.A To ensure that because he and also the 'Sitter' director, David Gordon Eco-friendly, found agree, it did not have business getting an antic, R-rated Jonah Hill comedy. Cutting this scene within the movie (especially after watching the film's trailer) makes total sense. Hopefully, it'll finish around the DVD outtakes. For the time being, you will have to watch out for '21 Jump Street' and 'Neighborhood Watch' to find out Jonah get serious. Oh, wait, people are comedies, too. Possibly something further later on then, an activity that even Hill doesn't find out about? 'The Sitter' hits theaters 12 ,. 9. New York Film Critics Circle Awards Preview: 'The Descendants,' Jean Dujardin and Meryl Streep Predicted to Win
By Tom O'Neil, GoldDerby.com Don't be surprised if some crazy award winners emerge from the voting powwow of the NY Film Critics Circle on Tuesday morning. According a poll of award experts conducted by Gold Derby, these will be the winners: 'The Descendants' (Best Picture), Jean Dujardin (Best Actor in 'The Artist') and Meryl Streep (Best Actress in 'The Iron Lady'), Albert Brooks (Best Supporting Actor in 'Drive') and Jessica Chastain (Best Supporting Actress in 'The Help,' 'Tree of Life' and 'Take Shelter'). However, the critics' circle is notorious for spawning voter clashes that result in wacky honorees. It all has to do with the archaic voting procedure. Each critic ranks favorites by assigning three (top choice), two and one point to each, and the winner must appear on a majority of ballots. As a result, voting in each category often spans many ballots, rival camps form and victory can only be claimed by a compromise candidate. 'Milk' won Best Picture of 2009, for example, only when warriors for 'Rachel Getting Married,' 'Happy-Go-Lucky' and 'Slumdog Millionaire' surrendered and accepted a compromise. No critics entering the 2002 voting conclave planned to pick the quirky 'Mulholland Drive,' but it emerged as the default choice when they couldn't decide among 'In the Bedroom,' 'Gosford Park' and 'Shrek' after many frustrating ballot clashes. In addition to 'The Descendants,' the other movies with strong NYFCC support this year are 'Tree of Life' and 'The Artist,' but don't be surprised if 'Moneyball' or 'Midnight in Paris' emerges as the fallback choice. The ultimate winner matters a lot because the Gotham critics have had a strong influence on the Oscars through time. Over the past 76 years, they were the first to hail eventual Academy Award Best Pictures 28 times. It's clear that the NY Film Critics' Circle played a key role in the eventual Oscar victories of such films as 'The Lost Weekend' (1946), 'Marty' (1956), 'Tom Jones' (1964), 'In the Heat of the Night' (1968), 'The Deer Hunter' (1979), 'Ordinary People' (1981), 'Terms of Endearment' (1984) and 'The Silence of the Lambs' (1992). But the agreement rate hasn't been too impressive recently. Only five times in the past 20 years has the same film won Best Picture in NY and on Oscar night. Last year 'The Social Network' swept all of the key critics' awards, but Hollywood didn't seem to care. David Fincher's Facebook movie was usurped by 'The King's Speech' at the industry awards bestowed by the guilds and the motion picture academy. Nonetheless, the circle has played a starring role in spotlighting many actors who went on to win Oscars. Actors like Forest Whitaker ('Last King of Scotland,' 2006), Geoffrey Rush ('Shine,' 1996) and Marcia Gay Harden ('Pollock,' 2000) probably owe their Academy Award victories in large part to early wins within the circle. Weekend Box Office: 'Breaking Dawn' Breaks Big, While 'Happy Feet Two' Stumbles
Okay, we all knew that 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1' was going to be huge; the only real suspense was: would it be record-breaking huge? (Early answer: Apparently not.) The bigger shockers were the failure of 'Happy Feet Two' to open anywhere near the heights of its smash predecessor, and the stunning success (for a glum indie Oscar hopeful playing on a handful of screens) of George Clooney's 'The Descendants.' 'Breaking Dawn' did break the franchise's own record for its opening midnight screening, which earned $30.25 million in the wee hours of Friday morning (edging out the $30 million benchmark set by 'Eclipse'). And its total take Friday of $72 million was the third largest single-day gross ever, behind the franchise's own 'New Moon' ($72.7 million) and 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($91 million). Still, numbers like that should have resulted in a weekend total of about $148 million. Instead, distributor Summit is estimating an opening at $139.5 million. That's short of the $142.8 million franchise record set two installments ago by 'New Moon.' It's possible that word-of-mouth on this one isn't as strong as expected. (At this writing, Moviefone's own informal survey finds 'Breaking Dawn' viewers either exuberantly enthusiastic or bitterly disappointed, with raves outnumbering pans about 2-to-1.) It's also possible that some parents and kids took the PG-13 rating seriously and stayed away, given that this installment is much more frank, disturbing, and gory than the first three movies when it comes to topics of sex, pregnancy, and childbirth. Now, $139.5 million is hardly a disappointment, especially when added to overseas grosses for a worldwide debut totaling $283.5 million. Nonetheless, with several big holiday movies opening in the next couple of weeks, 'Breaking Dawn' isn't positioned as well as it could be for the sharp dropoff likely to come over the Thanksgiving holiday. By the way, Taylor Lautner's thriller 'Abduction' has earned an estimated $27.6 million to date, grossing about as much over nine weeks as 'Breaking Dawn' did by the time Lautner first took his shirt off during Friday's first screening. No one expected the dancing penguins of 'Happy Feet Two' to be any kind of competition for first place, but many pundits did expect it to compete favorably with the original, which debuted at $41.5 million five years ago. After all, this one had much of the same cast, similarly striking Antarctic visuals, and 3D surcharges going for it. On the minus side, five years is a long time between sequels for a family movie; many kids who adored the flightless fowl back then have graduated to the relatively chaste vampires and werewolves of 'Twilight.' Also, the penguin craze has cooled since 'March of the Penguins' and 'Happy Feet' ruled the box office. Reviews weren't as strong this time out. Finally, the sequel faced stiff competition not just from 'Breaking Dawn,' but also from fellow family toon 'Puss in Boots,' still holding its own after four weeks in theaters. As a result, 'Happy Feet Two' had to settle for a second-place debut estimated at $22.0 million, about half the opening take that the original enjoyed. Last week's winner, 'Immortals,' faced a steep drop, as action epics tend to do on their second weekends. It lost 62 percent of last week's business and took third place with an estimated $12.3 million. (You wouldn't think the macho 'Immortals' and the estrogen-heavy 'Breaking Dawn' would be competing for the same audience, but the guys who dragged their dates to see the gruesome Greek epic last week probably returned the favor this week for the similarly bloody birth of Bella's baby.) In 10 days, 'Immortals' has grossed $53.0 million. Adam Sandler movies also typically lose half their business the second week; so it was with 'Jack and Jill,' which declined 52 percent dropped to fourth place on estimated earnings of $12.0 million. In two weeks, the comedy has taken in $41.0 million. In its fourth week, 'Puss in Boots' came in fifth with an estimated $10.7 million, down 57 percent from last weekend. James Cameron Previews 18 Minutes of $18 million 3D Conversion of 'Titanic'
Offering up what he called a turbocharged version ofTitantic, director James Cameron, along with his producer Jon Landau, unveiled 18 minutes of footage from the film's new, 3D conversion on Friday morning at the Paramount lot.our editor recommendsJames Cameron Wows CineEurope With First Footage of 'Titanic 3D' Eight scenes were screened, including footage of Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose DeWitt Bukater's (Kate Winslet) encounter on the Titantic's grand stairwell, their kiss on the bow of the ship and its sinking. "There are certain films that [warrant] being brought back to the theater," Cameron said. "There is a whole generation of people who haven't seen it at all." The 1997 disaster epic is being converted into 3D at a cost of $18 million and the process, which is ongoing, is expected to take 60 weeks, Cameron said. The conversion is largely being handled by visual effects company Stereo D and is requiring 300 artists. PHOTOS: 10 Billion Dollar Babies The screening marked the first time the footage has been shown in the U.S.; scenes also were shown at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam in September. The updated film, from Paramount, Fox and Cameron's own Lightstorm Entertainment, will be released by Paramount on April 6.Titanticgrossed $1.84 billion worldwide and won 11 Oscars, including those for best picture and best director. It is the second highest grossing film of all time, trailing only Cameron'sAvatar($2.78 billion). STORY: As He Converts 'Titanic' to 3D, James Cameron Raises Bar on Film Restorations Cameron said that while he is typically "very much against" converting traditional films into 3D - adding that he would have originally shotTitanticin 3D if the technology existed - he believes that the conversion enriches the film. "I totally believe 3D is an enhancement for the dramatic scenes - not just the big action," said Cameron, adding that while he believes most 3D conversions are more like "2.4D," the care he and others are taking with the project will ensure its 3D version is more like "2.99D." A new 4K digital master of the film was created as part of the conversion process; it will be the basis for traditional 2D showings of the film when it is released in April, Landau said. He said that there would be no changes to the content of the film. "That was the director's cut," Landau joked. Cameron added: "I don't have that revisionist gene." He said that both DiCaprio and Winslet are interested in the project, though neither has yet seen the 3D footage. The Painful Dying of Hollywood's Producers: No Top Class, No Calls Back
This short article initially made an appearance within the November. 4 problem from the Hollywood Reporter. You aren't getting me to discuss how awful the galleries are!" states one veteran producer before starting right into a tirade about them. "The galleries just don't respect what producers do. They'd rather not have access to them around. ... Galleries have so many professionals and waste a significant amount of cash on that." States another producer who ranks one of the Hollywood elite: "The higher the movies get, the greater professionals feel they're creating them. In my opinion you will find more professionals being sent to locations than in the past. ... Once the executive states 'my' movie, it drives you crazy, also it's happening increasingly more.Inch Using the movie business going through a historic adjusting as DVD revenue has shriveled and new technologies have not produced cash to consider its place, the problems facing the company are compressing the very best rank of producers, including individuals who have generous handles galleries -- in writing. It's trickle-up financial aspects, and individuals who've lengthy been accustomed to getting their voices respected have found that sometimes -- ouch -- their calls aren't even came back. Some think that existence has transformed forever within the movie business, while some -- observing that galleries are earning progressively homogeneous movies -- are wishing that eventually it is obvious that audiences crave different things which producers are the type using the experience and skill to build up and execute original, often even great, material. Proof of pressure galleries are imposing on large-title producers is everywhere. Jerry Bruckheimer just went through what he referred to to THR because the hardest settlement of his career with Disney to produce The Lone Ranger with The Actor-brad Pitt. Ron Howard and John Grazer of Imagine have experienced their wealthy deal at Universal reduce and also the studio close the lid on on the ambitious fantasy Western The Dark Tower, with different number of books by Stephen King. A-list producers Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy just departed from The new sony after 2 yrs with no eco-friendly light. The industry's ultimate 800-pound gorilla, Steven Spielberg, has already established struggles raising money. A few of the industry's most effective producers the galleries are earning them feel, as you puts it, progressively "irrelevant." Along with a top executive at one studio appreciates that oftentimes, there is a point. "If only I possibly could let you know they're wrong or they're being babies," he states. "But [their complaints] are legitimate. Also it doesn't seem like it's to the advantage of the film business. But galleries tend to be more involved with movies since the stakes are extremely high. You receive pressure in the bosses to be certain you're controlling the projects well- but that was previously producer's job." Which's from a professional in a studio that's considered relatively sincere. Not every one is. There appears to become broad agreement among high-level producers that Fox has lengthy been probably the most contentious with producers, before the financial aspects grew to become so challenging, largely because of a powerful-arm culture produced by studio chief Tom Rothman. Disney, with providers for example Marvel and Pixar and it is concentrate on top quality entertainment, now makes couple of movies of their own and scarcely appears to require producers. Vital and Universal also appear largely indifferent, aside from a clutch of stars like J.J. Abrams (who, particularly, is really a filmmaker themself). The new sony and Warner Bros. -- for the reason that order -- obtain the greatest marks. "Even if they're f--ing you, they're apologetic," states one prominent producer. "Fox, Vital, Universal -- it's simply: 'This is exactly what we're doing. Sorry we didn't remember to inform you.' " States producer Laurence Mark (Julie & Julia): "The new sony's the only real studio that kind of harks to that old studio days. Amy [Pascal] handles the large picture. She's pleased to make bold moves. They've great associations that repay.Inch Particularly, The new sony makes The Social Networking and Moneyball with giant producer Scott Rudin -- films that other galleries could have been unlikely to create. (Actually, one producer states he's heard professionals at other galleries make snide comments about The new sony's decision to take a risk on Moneyball.) However, many with ties towards the studio say even Pascal has needed to trim her sails in the present atmosphere. "The galleries trust a more compact and more compact quantity of producers," states Marshall Herskovitz, leader emeritus from the Producers Guild of America. But he adds he got that memo sometime ago. "I don't possess a deal any longer," states Herskovitz. "Am I upset? Yes. But there's no reason in crying about this.Inch Rather, he states, he and many more have modified: "Every producer I understand has needed to find out about independent financing. It might be these tectonic changes are finally striking individuals who thought these were invulnerable, but almost everyone has modified. Producers have moved into television and new media and sought out different ways to invest in features because that's what producers do. They're coping." (One producer states he's, like many more, searched for possibilities in television, but even that's difficult. "All of a sudden you're going from office to office, offering TV," he states. "There's some a Willy Loman aspect into it.Inch) "We are able to yell our heads off, but we with each other need to adjust to changes in the commercial,Inch states current guild co-leader Mark Gordon. "The planet is altering, and we must change by using it.Inch Possibly nothing demonstrates more strongly the main difference between then and today for producers compared to Imagine experience. Last decade, Universal was giving Howard and Grazer a hefty $17 million annually in overhead in addition to costs of $two million in advance against a minimum of 5 % of gross (more if Howard was pointing). The partners even had two "put" pictures -- meaning they might pressure projects into Universal's pipeline -- though they never worked out that option. Their deal has since been trimmed to $8 million-along with a year, based on an educated source, but when it's time for renegotiation (it runs through 2013), they are certain to face further pressure. Beck, private school grad, gives back
Prodigious musical talent must find its beginnings somewhere, as Christophe Beck knows. The Canadian-born composer began exploring his own penchant for music at a private high school in Toronto. "I was fortunate," Beck says. "The school hired a bunch of great teachers, a lot of them professional musicians and that kind of immersive experience was crucial to my development as a musician." But, when Beck learned that some schools in Los Angeles have no music program to speak of, he was "shocked."Beck was introduced to this disparity by Education Through Music-Los Angeles, a charity devoted to providing quality music education to disadvantaged schools in the L.A. area.Fellow composers Austin Wintory and Tim Davies invited Beck to take part in ETM-LA, and since then Beck has landed a spot on the organization's advisory board. Victoria Lanier, exec director of the nonprofit, notes that Beck's involvement with the program has been advantageous not only because of his financial support, but also "because of the visibility he brings." "It allows people who may not otherwise hear about ETM-LA to know about us," says Lanier.ETM-LA, founded in 2006, is based on the Education Through Music model in NY. During its first year, ETM-LA worked with two schools in the L.A. area, bringing music as a part of the core curriculum to more than 800 students. Since then, the charity has branched out and now serves 4,500 eighth grade students at 10 disadvantaged L.A. schools. The program's mission, says Beck, is to create equal opportunity for a well-rounded music education."It isn't really whether or not a student becomes a musician it's giving each student an equal opportunity for success in whatever field they want to pursue," Lanier says. "It's about transferable skills."Beck joins a list of other showbiz musicians who have contributed to the org, including vocalist Lisbeth Scott and composer Michael Giacchino. ETM-LA's plan is to continue its expansion into new schools every year, and, according to Lanier, continue to "connect renowned artists to the community and to spotlight the (music) programs that are going on."Beck himself is looking forward to visiting schools and discussing both his personal and professional experience with music. "I'd love to do master classes," says Beck, "and I plan to have kids sit in on recording sessions as well.""I want all students to have the opportunity I had," says Beck as he reflects on his own music education experience. "I think sometimes music takes a backseat to sports -- there's a lot of pressure to be a great athlete ... (but) a pursuit of the arts is just as important, and there are kids where sports is not what they were born to do, and it would be a shame to leave those kids out in the cold."He continues, "That's why ETM-LA is great -- it gives them the chance to do that, especially if they can't afford the instruments after all, I'm sure schools have plenty of football pads to hand out."BILLION-DOLLAR COMPOSER: CHRISTOPHE BECK Beck's green phase | Resurrecting 'Muppets' in Disney tradition | Dawn of the undead | Beck's music in his own words | Beck, private school grad, gives back Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Photo: Does Scarlett Johansson Look Like Our Sexiest Movie Alien Yet?
Over the course of her career, Scarlett Johansson has played a sexy Dutch muse, a sexy clone, a sexy journalism student, a sexy Boleyn sister and a sexy, spandex-clad Roman spy. (She is so sexy that David Fincher did not cast her in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for fear that audiences wouldn’t be able “to wait for her to take her clothes off.”) So it’s not surprising that in Jonathan Glazer’s upcoming film Under The Skin, the bombshell doesn’t just play an alien — she plays an alien who uses a voluptuous human body to ensnare male prey. Take a look at the first photo of Johansson in character to see how she stacks up against cinema’s other most titillating extraterrestrials. Here, Johannsson seems to be channeling a few different sexy alien attributes: the ultimate femme fatale quality of Natasha Henstridge’s Sil in Species with the edginess of Milla Jovovich’s Leeloo in The Fifth Element with the total disregard for PETA-approved outerwear of Alex Pettyfer’s John Smith in I Am Number Four. Do you think that makes her the sexiest movie extraterrestrial of them all. Before weighing in below, be sure to consider Jeff Bridges in Starman? Under The Skin — not to be confused with Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In — will be the first feature from Glazer since 2004’s Birth starring Nicole Kidman. Adapted from Michael Faber’s novel of the same title, Under The Skin stars Johansson as Isserley, an extraterrestrial sent to Earth by a rich corporation on her planet to pick up unwary hitchhikers. Through her terrestrial adventures though, Isserley ultimately meets a man who convinces her to change her view on hitchhikers and breaks her heart. Obviously. Under The Skin is currently shooting in Scotland. [ICYDK via Playlist]

The way a Calligraphy Pen Rewrote Steve Jobs' Existence
I understand where Jobs' inspiration originated from, because I walked into the same location three several weeks after he'd left in 1974: the calligraphy building at Reed College in Tigard, Or. "My first impression was that the rest of the students really loved him," states Jobs' first calligraphy professor (and mine), Robert Palladino. "That surprised me, because there have been each one of these prodigies going swimming, and Steve would be a dropout. However they detected greatness even so.Inchour editor suggests Apple Boss Jobs to consider Another Medical Leave of Absence'iGenius: How Jobs Transformed the World' Airs Sunday on Discovery PHOTOS: Jobs' Dying: The way the Magazines Covered Jobs would be a genius dropout with drive, so after his one 1972 semester like a having to pay student, he hung out at Reed for 18 several weeks more, studying calligraphy as single-mindedly like a monk. Later, Jobs became a member of a Reed friend (and future Apple worker) to review just like a monk within the Himalayas, barefoot, with shaved mind and robes. But his first monastery was Reed's calligraphy room, run by Palladino, who'd been a Trappist monk for 18 years. PHOTOS: Apple Items in TV and films Plastic Valley's future most well-known screamer analyzed having a monk who spent years going for a vow of silence. "Reed College in those days offered possibly the very best calligraphy instruction in the united states,Inch Jobs stated when he gave Stanford's 2005 graduation speech. "Through the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was superbly hands calligraphed...I discovered serif and sans serif typefaces, about different the quantity of space between different letter combinations, by what makes great typography great. It had been beautiful, historic, creatively subtle in ways that science can't capture." Calligraphing just like a monk gave Jobs an esthetic sense most math-nerd tech titans (like Bill Gates) lack. STORY: Private Jobs Memorial Looking for March. 16 "About 2 yrs later Steve returned to Reed to inform me he was focusing on computer systems from his parents' garage," states Palladino, now a upon the market priest doing public in British and Latin in Or. "He desired to talk to me about my Greek letters." As Jobs told Stanford's graduates, "Whenever we were creating the very first Macs computer, everything returned in my experience. And that we designed everything in to the Mac. It had been the very first computer with beautiful typography. Basically had never dropped in on that single course attending college, the Mac would have not had multiple typefaces or proportionally spread fonts. And also, since Home windows just replicated the Mac, it's likely that no pc might have them." STORY: Apple Shares Hit New High It wasn't only a calligraphic skill Jobs acquired at Reed. It had been a mindset. At orientation, freshmen were advised, "You're here to measure the mind from the person sitting alongside you, and also the finest minds whatever person resided." Reed's dropout, suicide, and grad-school admissions rates were sky-high. Social abilities and gradepoint earnings were low. At Stanford, any grade below a C was removed from students' records. At Reed, there is no gentleman's C, and also you were likely to be too pure to even request what your grades were. Your ultimate goal was perfection. It had been about questing individualism, original thinking, callous meritocracy. The college mascot was a picture of burning ambition: a griffin blazing such as the sun. "Steve were built with a flamethrower mind," states Tim Girvin, a calligrapher who began on the Reed scene and continued to create logos for 400 films, from Apocalypse Now towards the Adventures of Tintin, and for Jobs, who asked him to operate on the mouse-triggered computer -- a "M.A.C." "Steve stated, 'You need to come lower to Apple, I've something I've got to inform you.' I had been amazed to become flown lower to operate on experiments in type design with this technology still covered with secrecy. I arrived in the outdoors to dedicate yourself him like a renegade, to consider in a different way about how to overcome that design. "A button, the cursor device, was found in some type of card board with wire being released the finish. 'Could you draw a logo design for that Mac computer manually with this particular cursor, on the pc itself?' he requested. I couldn't. The screen was small, the pixels large. So rather, manually, I made sketches for that logo design as well as the pc, all completed with a calligraphic brush tool." Jobs loved the end result. Positive thing he loved it. "Should you be on his advantages, it had been always, what's the next tier of perfection? What's the following factor you could do this that might be better? And when you had been around the bad side, then you definitely were gone. Steve were built with a real temper. There is yelling -- not tied beside me. There is furniture type of thrown around an area. He'd a genuine focus, a path he was on, and also you were either on the way on and on there or else you weren't. People talk about being terrorized by Jobs, and i believe it had been due to that crazy passion and fire he'd. He was extremely enthusiastic about doing new amazing things." "Ethically, Steve was as nice a man while you could meet," states Palladino, who never saw Jobs in the chair-tossing days. "A genuine nice fellow." Palladino's tries to get in touch with Jobs after fame struck were rebuffed by Apple, whose office responded having a silence stonier than any Trappist's. Since Jobs' dying, Palladino has become calls from as far as China, requesting experience into where Jobs' talent originated from. Requested which stars should play Jobs and themself within the potential The new sony movie adaptation of Walter Isaacson's Jobs bio (released March. 24), Palladino states, "I don't see many movies. I never saw a TV until I acquired from the cloister." Jobs hired Girvin to complete more designs many occasions through the years. "When he began NeXT [the pc company Jobs released in 1985], he stated, 'Can you brew up some type of visual expression based on how we tell the storyline of NeXT?' He stated that brand am corporate and disciplined, he required to then add magical significant energy to that particular.Inch To Jobs, calligraphy was the miracle that enlivens science. "The majority of my correspondence with him was handwritten. Which was a part of our connection, the go back to the hands." Girvin states the final time these were in touch, 7 or 8 years back, Jobs would be a transformed guy. "He grew to become a lot more calm. At first, he am youthful, so passionate, so crazy, and thus direct, it had been another type of energy. I believe he just grew to become more peaceful in the character." "Your day of Steve's dying, I required my iPad and began drawing sketches concerning the Mac, beginning wherever I had been with Steve 3 decades ago," states Girvin. This time around, he didn't require a calligraphy pen -- and also the iPad is really less than the Pelikan pen that Palladino uses. "The iPad provides you with a chance to take pictures and notes and sketches and concepts, and converge them in a single space, effortlessly." Finally, Girvin can perform what Jobs requested him to complete long ago when (see drawing above). "It is going back towards the initial computer dream," states Girvin. "You cannot connect the dots searching forward," Jobs told the Stanford grads. "You are able to only connect them searching backwards. So you've to trust the dots will in some way connect inside your future. You need to rely upon something - your stomach, future, existence, karma, whatever. This method hasn't allow me to lower, and contains made a big difference during my existence." Related Subjects Jobs

Wes Craven is 'The Last to Know' If You will see considered a 'Scream 5'
Wes Craven will in all probability return for just about any fifth 'Scream.' Supposing the script is great. Craven told Movieweb the fifth and sixth film will be in the entire shebang, but he never signs onto direct until he sees the finished product. Producer Bob Weinstein is gung-ho about ongoing the series, even though 'Scream 4,' which showed up in this area in April, disappointed laminator tl901-office. Still, despite having less written word together with a waning fascination with the series, Craven has ideas about where the story is certainly going next. It is something associated with the ambiguous ending of 'Scream 4.' Asked for by Movieweb in what happens for the which makes it through figures, Craven joked, "I'd have to kill you essentially stated.Inch He mentioned he loved the fact 'Scream 4' didn't finish getting a "hook" for an additional film. "We felt it absolutely was simpler to permit the crowd speculate instead of have a number of these clues put in their lap." Craven states the options meant for a fifth film because Weinstein wants it to happen. "Whether I'll be a part of it or else? I am unsure. My contract generates for me the initial look. Once they show me something that's really wonderful? Clearly I'll be a part of it." Odds are good, since Craven hasn't switched them -- or a smaller amount promising projects -- lower yet. He referred to how a 'Scream' machine works: Typically what is going to happen is always that Bob Weinstein or Kevin Williamson will build up a completely new idea, and they're going to pitch it either to. SHAKEDOWN: Will Moviegoers End Up Paying For 3D Glasses If Studios Wont?
UPDATE: Sony Responds To NATOs Claim That Studios 3D Glasses Plan Is Myopic The battle lines are starting to harden around who’ll pay for those lame-looking 3D glasses. I’ve learned that other studios might line up behind Sony’s decision to stop paying the average 50-cents a pair fee beginning in May. Rival studios tell me Fox is on board. “We’re studying our options, but haven’t made any decisions yet,” denied Fox Filmed Entertainment spokesman Chris Petrikin. Remember, Foxwas first in line to try tostop paying for glasses back in 2009 when it released Ice Age. But then had to abandon that effort after theaters rebelled.Sony was technically correct today when it said in a statement that “there never has been” a formal agreement stipulating that studios would shoulder the cost of 3D glasses. But it’s easy to understand why exhibitors are stunned by Sony’s stoppage. Because it changes an understanding that’s been in place since 2005 when Disney’s Chicken Little kicked off the 3D movie phenom. “It is a radical departure from what the practice has been,” National Association of Theater Owners President John Fithian tells me. Now Regal CEO Amy Miles warns that if studiosend the practice then it could “result in fewer screens exhibiting 3D films”. That’s bad news for Hollywood, whichplans to release 39 films in 3D next year, vs. 36 in 2011. Exhibitors might encourage consumers to bring their own 3D glasses. That may be the future anyway. But BTIG analyst Rich Greenfield says if theaters require payment for 3D specs on top of the typical 3D surcharge($3.25 to $4 a ticket), then “the U.S. moviegoer will reject this as another way for exhibitorsto milk them and further decrease their interest in 3D (and perhaps going to themovies in general)”. The fight is over glasses manufactured for RealD which it, in turn, supplies them to theaters. RealD’sstock price was down -14.7% today on the Sony news. The 3D tech company won’t disclose how much it pays for the specs, but it’s said to charge anywhere from 40 cents a pair to $1 depending on the size of the order. Some exhibitors grumble about dealing with a monopoly, but RealD spokesman Rick Heineman tells me that the system”allows us to do quality control.” He adds that the company is open to other business models. For example, moviegoers in Europe and Australia frequently buy glasses for about $1 at the concession stand. RealD also wouldn’t mind if people keep and reusetheir glasses. Or shell out as much as $150 for a classy-looking pair from manufacturers including Polaroid, Gunnar Optics, Marchon, and Oakley. (What, no Pradayet?) Manufacturers say that the costly specs provide a better 3D experience, though Heineman says RealDcertifies that even the cheap modelsmeet its minimum specifications. Theater owners maintain that studios already have a good deal. Hollywood collects about 52% of the box office revenue in the U.S. vs. 40% or less in Europe and Australia.Sony is holding out an olive branch of sorts byasking exhibitors to “engage in a collegial dialogue with us about this issue, including at ShowEast next month.” But Fithian says the studio”should have started by talking to their partners”.Watch Transformers 3 Online

The Patron Saints
A Pigeon Projects production. (Worldwide sales: Pigeon, Brooklyn.) Created, directed, edited by John M. Cassidy, Melanie Shatzky. With: James, Florence, Ro-Ro, Robert, Julius. An finish from the road the majority of us hope will not look quite as bleak is described in "The Patron Saints," the feature debut of documentarians John M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky. Portrait of the crowded residential care facility for that seniors and firm does not flinch in the most depressing aspects of senility, abandonment and despair. Poetical instead of narrative or information-focused structure will not tempt mainstream educational tv stations. But individuals available to more abstract nonfiction may bite, additionally to fest and cinematheque developers. Narrator is James, a mobility-impaired product of promote houses and jail stints who's arrived at pic's un named U.S. elderly care somewhat sooner than most, age-smart. He isn't probably the most supportive observer -- because he appears to locate other residents' myriad worries funny -- but he's a colorful one that provides virtually the only real notes of humor here. (Particularly when remembering a lengthy-ago drunken house party's aftermath: "I awaken the following day, there is two broads [in mattress] beside me, and chicken wings everywhere.") Otherwise, individuals living listed here are mainly in pitiful spirits and physical states, though their health conditions go unspecified. There is the windowed Hungarian emigre who simply, frequently noisally, really wants to die a resident whose mantra-like repeated plea "Gimme a bit a coffee pleeeease" abruptly switches to "I really hope she chokes onto itInch when her roommate really will get some the blind more youthful one still visited (although with police escort) with a brother who molested her for a long time. Distilling the confusion felt by many is really a lady who keeps asking nobody particularly "Where's my mother? Why am I here? Somebody please let me know.Inch Another who clearly is not going home soon, or likely ever, is petitioned to do this with a hulking middle-aged boy not capable of taking care of themself -- we briefly glimpse him inside a vehicle stacked neck-high with unhealthy foods wrappers. James notes the attractive hillsides all around the facility (situated inside a rather desolate area near an airport terminal) were produced from landfill, a present-wrapped metaphor when there is one. Though in the beginning atmosphere appears almost Dickensian, helmers also make obvious that largely Hispanic and African-American staff listed here are doing the very best they are able to on likely low pay and financial assets. It isn't a location it's possible to work without considerable assets of persistence and generosity (though whenever we see James connect to some nurses, the correct answer is obvious they view him like a trouble-maker). Low-res lensing contributes to downbeat air, and can doubtless be simpler around the eyes around the small screen. Classical and avant-garde (Arvo Part, John Cage) arrangements provide somber soundtrack accompaniment whenever we hear cheerier music music (a resident's tone-hard of hearing rendition of "America the gorgeous,Inch dance music from the couple going to vocalists), it feels as though ironic counterpoint.Camera (color, HD), Cassidy, Shatzky music administrators, Brooke Wentz, Joshua Mehr seem, Nicholas Sjostrom.
